Beauty’s Secret Liquid Gold

argan_oil

A lot of oils from plant extracts are in the market these days.  There are olive oil, virgin coconut oil and aloe vera extracts. But, a month ago during my visit to a skin care clinic, i was introduced to a special oil exclusively imported from Morocco.  This is what is known as Liquid Gold, the Argan Oil.  It is extracted from Argan trees which only grows in Morocco, which is why it is a bit pricey.  It has been used for food preparation, but recently has gained worldwide attention due to its beauty miracles.

After a month of using this oil, people would comment about the glow on my face and how younger-looking I am.  I also get a lot of compliments on my shiny, healthy hair.

Here are the uses of Argan oil:

1. Face Moisturizer

I was advised to substitute it for my moisturizer. After cleansing the face in morning and night, put a drop or two of argan oil onto your fingers and massage gently face and neck.  It absorbs quickly and is never greasy. I use it as a make-up base.

2. Rejuvenating & brightening face mask

I make my own mask by mixing 1 tablespoon of lemon or kalamansi juice, 1 egg white, and 3 drops of argan oil in a bowl. Apply it on a clean, dry face and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Do this twice a week and say bye-bye to fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Face and Lip Scrub

To get rid of white and blackheads, add a few drops of argan oil to fine brown sugar. Lightly massage into face using circular motion and rinse off with warm water. Do this twice a week as well.

4. Leave-on conditioner

After shower, while your hair is still damp, add a few drops of argan oil to your hair and scalp. This will help to hydrate and moisturize the hair, and reverse the damages caused by hair-drying and curling irons.

5. Overnight Hair Treatment

Massage a generous amount of argan oil into your hair, ends and scalp. Wrap your hair with a towel or showercap and leave it on while you sleep. In the morning, wash your hair with your favorite shampoo and you’ll feel that amazing glow.

These are the five major uses of argan oil in my life. But you can, basically, also use it to moisturize and smoothen any part of your body.

Enjoy!

An open letter to Ms. Sicam

Dear Ma’am,

You have offended a number of my colleagues.  But what amazed me is that most of your co-journalists were also offended by your transgressing article “Are Resident Doctors Really Doctors” published in the Opinion section of Mindanao Times dated July 20, 2015.

Let me start by introducing myself as a physician, only 2 years in practice, have not started my residency training yet but I am a doctor, nonetheless.

Now, regarding your offensive article. Thank you for emphasizing Senator Santiago’s stand against malpractice. But i guess you haven’t heard or read, the senator is actually probing on the businesswoman, Antonia Carandang-Park , who treated a little girl’s Hodgkin’s Lymphoma with stem cell therapy only to find out the so-called Dr. Park is a fake. Now there was no mention Ms. Carandang-Park  is a “resident” doctor, if i remember correctly. ;) We are all against malpractice, Madame. It is also an insult to us licensed physicians, who were made to swear to “do no harm” by our great grandfather, Hippocrates.

Resident doctors BELIEVE they’re “doctors” because they have finished 4 years of premedical course, 4 years of doctor of medicine degree, a year of internship, passed the Physician licensure exam, passed their pre-residency screening! They gave up all the “nightlives” a young adult could have, they gave up seeing their young children grow, they gave up all important family affairs just to pass the course, they go on duty for 36 hours or more just to tend to patients. They barely have time to go out of the hospital hence they are called “residents”! They deserve to be called “doctors”.

You mentioned that you only recognize the doctors who are compassionate, who gave you attention, and who have big hearts and gentle hands that cure the sick but, Madame, i tell you, those you see in the emergency room are only a part and parcel of the whole medical field.  You have a very limited definition of what a doctor is. We have pathologists, radiologists, anesthesiologists who have less patient interactions but still are doctors and have very big impacts on implementing proper patient care. You have the DOH secretary and heads of offices who are all doctors but do not interact first-hand with patients, but are vital for implementing disease prevention and primary health care in this country.

In the hospitals, Madame, we have a section in the emergency room we call triage.  This section, often manned by a licensed doctor, identifies which department (internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics or obstetrics) should see the patient and identify which patients needs immediate care and who doesn’t. You mentioned your friend came in for acute heart pain?  A chest pain is not always due to a heart disease.  We have differential diagnoses for every symptom a patient feels, the diagnosis may range from a non-serious costochondritis to gastroesphageal reflux disease to myocardial infarction.  However, regarding management in the emergency room, it always depends on the urgency of your patient’s condition.  In most public hospitals, only 1 or 2 resident physician go on duty in the emergency room.  Oftentimes, there is at least 10 patients arriving at the same time in the ER; let us say, two are dead on arrival, two are in coma but still have heartbeats, two are having shortness of breath due to asthma and due to gunshot, two are having massive bleeding, one is in severe acute chest pain and the last one is having mild acute chest pain.  If you were the resident at that time, Madame, with all common sense, who among these do you attend to first? For a resident doctor who hadn’t eaten lunch nor dinner, who hadn’t had bathroom privelege for 10 hours at least, who stayed awake while all the world is sleeping, who do you think among the patients will he attend to first?

As for the nurse, Madame, she answered you “nurse ako. Ano PO ba ang problema?” she was, actually, asking you of the history of your patient’s problem.  She even used PO just to be courteous, but you answered with “ikaw ang nurse, dapat alam mo ang problema”. Now who’s arrogance are we talking about here? Probably she observed that your patient was okay so you weren’t entertained for another hour, or she was actually pissed off by your answer so she made you wait on purpose!  A common response to someone who is arrogant and impatient, and who sounds so demanding and audacious.

I have to say the “no uniform, no name tag, no insigna (are we members of the armed forces?)…did not answer in english” made me laugh.  We have the scrub suit, madame, we can also attend to patients without our white coat on.  Your fake doctor, Ms. Park, wore smock gown and they believed she was a doctor! Your resident physician wore casual clothing and you thought he was a fake? C’mon..  Madame, you are in a public hospital, majority of our patients there are those who have less in life and underprivileged, they would be intimidated if you speak to them in english.  You should have told the doctor that you only understand English, I’m sure he will speak the language fluently, and explain to you the condition of your patient in layman terms for you to understand fully.

You are wondering if these are the kinds of nurses and doctors that we have right now? Yes Ma’am.  These are the kind of compassionate, attentive doctors and nurses we have in the country right now, with the heart and hand for all patients.  These are the doctors and nurses who are in-demand abroad because of their dedication and motivation to work. Now, may I ask you, is this the kind of journalism we have in the country right now? Biased and prejudiced and is not even based on facts and clearly with no proper research?

I have heard Senator Santiago said that “The government is duty-bound to protect its citizens from unscrupulous individuals who claim to be practitioners of medicine and other professions without legitimate education, training and experience”.  But a bill to punish some “arrogant” licensed and experienced resident doctors? For real? In that case, I’d also like to suggest a bill punishing unscrupulous politicians, policemen, traffic enforcers, custom officers, lawyers and journalists.

Madame, I actually reacted later than my colleagues, because I always would consider where a person is coming from. However, i have a hard time putting myself in your shoes! Because, earlier today, I asked my 12-year old nephew, “are resident doctors real doctors?”, he answered “of course”.  Madame, I can’t fathom why you even have to ask that?!

An Open Letter On Teenage Pregnancy

img20150718_234432

Dear Teens,

Months ago, I went through our files in the office looking at our statistics of pregnancies in the town I’m currently working in. I was hoping it would give me data as to what causes maternal mortality (death) and morbidity (illness) in the community.  To my surprise, an alarming number of teenage pregnancies were recorded a few years back until today!  I was so alarmed that I left what my primary purpose was, and instead, went on to researching about teenage pregnancies in the internet.

Here’s the catch! Worldwide, 1 out of 4 girls aged below 20years old gets pregnant without planning to! What more, in 2011, the Philippines had the most number of teenage pregnancies in all of Southeast Asia! I was deeply saddened by the statistics. How on earth did this happen to you guys?! You are our youth whom i still associate with the success of this country.haha!

And so, i researched, made my powerpoint materials, searched youtube for teenage preg videos, and made leaflets/pamphletes about teenage pregnancy.  Afterwhich, I wrote letters to all the high schools in town asking them if I could have a symposium about Teenage Pregnancy Awareness with their students. 4 out of 7 schools replied positively, well…that’s already a yehei! ;)

Fast forward to my info drive… I started my lecture about the changes your bodies undergo during adolescents, which are called Secondary Sexual Characteristics such as, for the boys–enlargement of the testicles and penis (now don’t smirk, we are grown-ups here), rapid growth spurt, deepening of your voice, growth of pubic hair, facial hair and hairs everywhere; for the girls–there is what we call thelarche or breastbudding, pubarche or the growth of pubic hair and hair in the armpits, and lastly, menarche or our first menstruation. These are lectures in your Health subject so I’m pretty sure you know about this already.

I’ve mentioned in my lectures how you guys are still fully dependent on your parents. You always think about being independent.  Who can blame you anyway?  Probably, this time you’re already drinking coffees instead of milk, riding a motorbike or driving a car (do you have a license?), cook your own food (yeah, but mostly canned foods and pancit canton) and you have a little freedom on deciding for yourselves.  Well, that’s only a bit of independence.  Independence is the time when you no longer totally “depend” on your parents’ financial and psychosocial support.  It’s somewhat the time when you now earn to pay your own bills and buy your own food (uhhm, well, i’m doing it now and i think i’m independent.haha). At your stage, no matter how much you love playing move-out-of-the-house, at the end of the day, there is no place like being at home where there are people who decide for your sake about what to eat for dinner. True?!

Another thing, you guys are curious about so many things that even if it’s hot, you still want to swallow it! You feel so much pressure about trying out things like drugs, smoking and sex!  You know it’s bad for you, but you just tell yourselves that hey, my friends are doing it, they say there’s nothing wrong with it, so i tried it.  And oftentimes, what is just a “try” in the beginning leads to addiction.  Studies show that adolescents, like you, are not yet mature enough to differentiate what’s wrong from right, and to think ahead of the consequences of your actions today! It doesn’t need an algebraic equation to solve the problems troubling you right now, you just need your family to guide and inspire you, a few true and good friends to share with, and other people’s experiences to learn from.

Now, my main topic: TEENAGE PREGNANCY.  I am not concerned with the stigma you will be facing, nor the family conflicts you will experience, nor the depression you will probably feel, nor the delay of schooling which will surely happen to you if you get pregnant at that age! I am more concerned with the health risks you will be facing during the 9-month course.  For first time mothers, your body perceives the baby as something of foreign origin (not a foreigner, i mean something which is not inherent in the body), this causes your blood vessels to have spasms and some things we call.endothelial dysfunctions which leads to an increase in blood pressure to more than 140/90mmHg, to proteins seen in the urine, to edema, to headaches and blurring of vision.  This disease is what we call Preeclampsia  and this can cause death, if not managed, due to liver and kidney failure, malfunctions in the brain, and to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC-such another topic, just research for it.haha)! Preeclampsia, also results in preterm babies coz there’s no better cure for it than delivery.  The babies have a higher risk of being delivered preterm, when the heart and lungs and not yet fully developed.  On the other hand, you guys are prone to experiencing cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD) meaning, the head of your baby cannot pass through your pelvis so there is a high chance that you will undergo cesarean section. Of course, how can it pass through a small hips which is still developing! Nutritional deficiency is also a problem in your age group because most of you are picky eaters.  And you have to take iron, folic acid and calcium supplements during pregnancy. Imagine taking big capsules (you cannot even swallow a small tablet of paracetamol for your fever, what more capsules?). These and lot more risksssss. So please think twice before you leap.

I just want you to be responsible guys. Say NO if you still can.  Sex is something Serious and not a pastime.  For me it is even something Sacred, which you should only share after you are married. You should love your body and respect yourself. Nobody can force you to have sex when you don’t want to. Anyway, if you are forced to do it then, that’s not True Love but True Lust. Being in a relationship now at 12-18 years old doesn’t guarantee you of a future with him. A baby can’t make him stay! True love awaits you in the future. ;)  Always make a plan and prioritize things.  What is more important to you now? Is it studies? Is it honoring God and making your parents proud of you? Then, Do it! Avoid being in an intimate relationship at a young age, it leads you to things you might probably regret in the future. Do the right thing, even if it hurts your feelings, at least it will give you peace of mind.  Older people always pray for themselves to have inner peace, you will have peace of mind when you know in your heart you’ve made the right decision.

Love,

DocNM
